PPI would like to be part of the solution in providing mental health services to the communities in Machinga and Nkhotakota and Likoma districts since it has been noted that there is limited knowledge on how to tackle mental health problems.

Malawi has continuously registered mental health-related suicide, especially among men and boys due to mental health illiteracy such as depression, suicide, substance-induced psychotic disorders, and other forms of psychosis that have profoundly affected most communities in Malawi. Zomba mental hospital (ZMH), the only biggest referral mental hospital in Malawi, reported accumulative admissions of 5,914 (Males: 4424, Females: 1,490) cases with various mental disorders among young people from 2017 to 2019. Besides, the hospital registered 1,137 (Males: 1,131, Females: 6) Substance-Induced Psychotic Disorders among young people within the same period (Zomba Mental Hospital Registry, 2019). The data solely reflects clients referred from various district hospitals for admissions besides those managed in various district hospitals and health facilities across the country. In the year 2022, Malawi registered 208 cases of suicide and 29 cases from January to February 2023. The majority of the cases involve males than females (Zodiak news online).
